Poem for Flora

For Charmian's mother: a Christmas gift

Above the dappled shadow of the leaf carpet

the tree stands firm, confident in its years.

Its leaves weave a gently shifting pattern

against the sky:

green is edged by blue-white,

warmth caresses the coolness of shade.

Its sustaining roots reach deep.

She takes her name from the earth.

Pride and courage and concern have shaped her spirit:

time has touched her as softly as breathing.

Rich shadows crown her beauty.
