(1) The 'General Hewitt' was a three-masted fully rigged
ship of 973 tonnes built in Bengal in 1812 because of the availability of good
mahogany. It was used for convict transportation to New South Wales, and
possibly to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) from 1814. It had a crew of around 80.
It made various journeys to Sydney via Port Adelaide and Port Phillip Bay in the
1850s. (2) John was previously married but no
records could be identified of his first marriage.
*John Quintrell and Mary Toy are Neil's
great-great-grandparents. |
